We’ve previously told you about the various mobile apps K¹² has created for Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android operating systems.
While our team is hard at work creating more apps for all of our K¹² families, there is no shortage of great educational apps from other developers around the world.
Since I’m an Android user, I’m sharing my favorite educational apps for Android here today. If you have an Android device and access to the Google Play Store, you may want to check out some of these apps for your children.
As always, please read and understand an app’s descriptions, reviews and permissions before downloading. We cannot be held responsible for any apps downloaded from other developers in the Google Play Store, so please exercise caution when installing new software on your phone. Also, review the content of each app to ensure it’s appropriate for your child’s age.
Don’t worry, iPhone users- we haven’t forgotten about you! I’ll be putting together a list of my favorite educational apps for iOS in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.
All links below will launch the Google Play Store.
- Kid Mode: Play + Learn (Free)
Put your phone into Kid Mode and get fun, educational kids games and videos! This app protects your phone by locking the Home button & engages kids 8 and under with fun, educational kids’ games & videos. - Sky Map (Free)
One of my personal favorite apps, Google Sky Map turns your phone into a virtual planetarium. Teach your kids about astronomy by looking through your phone’s camera at objects in the sky. Can’t find an object you’re looking for? Use the search feature and Google Sky Map will point you to it! - Spelling Bee ($0.99)
Learn to spell more than 2,300 of the most common English words. Clear audio clips are included. Words gradually increase in difficulty. Mix things up by choosing the length of quiz, difficulty level and whether to use timed mode. - GeoQuiz (Free)
Test your knowledge of world geography with GeoQuiz, one of Android’s best quiz games. This game is geared towards a little bit older audience, and includes categories like Cities of the World, Extremes, Forests, Deserts and Plains and more! - Easy Kid Timer ($1.00)
Easy Kid Timer is a fun visual timer for a parent or teacher of any child learning patience and the concept of time. Great for children with autism: time kids can see is crucial to their understanding of time and patience.
This is just a small sampling of the great educational Android apps for kids, and more are coming out every day. Do you know of any other great Android apps and games for kids? Let us know in the comments!
