Preparing for the First Day of Online School

If your child is gearing up for online school this fall, there’s no need to worry about new wardrobes or bus schedules. Instead, focus on these key steps to ensure a successful start to the school year.

Set Up a Study Space

Creating a dedicated workspace free from distractions is crucial for your child’s concentration and productivity. Consider these ideas for designing the perfect personalized nook for deep learning:

  • Desk and Comfortable Chair: Ensure ergonomic support for long study sessions.
  • Cozy Reading Area: Include pillows and a blanket for comfortable reading breaks.
  • Personalized Décor: Add framed photos, wall art, or decorative desk supplies to make the space inviting.
  • Trash Can and Recycle Bin: Keep the area tidy and organized.
  • Traveling Lap Desk: Ideal for students using laptops who want the flexibility to move around during the day.

Check Your Tech

Ensure your child is ready to log in and start learning by setting up their computer and making sure everything runs smoothly. Follow these steps to prepare:

  • Set Up the Computer: Install the necessary software and ensure all school-related applications and programs function correctly.
  • Internet Connection: Verify that the internet signal is strong and stable in your child’s study area.
  • Test Equipment: Check peripherals such as the keyboard, mouse, webcam, and microphone to ensure they work properly.
  • Update Software: To avoid disruptions, make sure the operating system and all installed software are up to date.
  • Backup Plan: Have a backup device or plan in case of technical difficulties. Ensure your child knows how to access tech support if needed. If your child attends a K12-powered school, they can contact the customer support team for technical support.
  • Parental Controls: Set up any necessary parental controls to keep your child focused and safe online.

Create a Daily Schedule

One of the benefits of online school is the flexibility to structure the school day. Keep your child organized and on task by creating a daily schedule that includes breaks, outdoor time, and exercise. This will also help them plan for extracurricular activities.

“As students build out a new routine with their class schedule, have them evaluate the time they have to become involved with a club, volunteering, or even start working,” says Laura Massey, Student Career Coaching Manager at K12. “These activities help students explore their interests, further develop durable employability skills, and provide insight into their life after high school goals.”

Make an Activity List

Incorporate outdoor activities into your child’s day, and don’t hesitate to try something new. Walking, gardening, or playing sports like baseball or soccer are excellent ways to get fresh air and exercise during the school day.

Connect With Other Parents

Engage with other online school families to share tips and resources. K12 offers the Learning Coach Community, where you can connect with other parents of online students for support and advice.

By focusing on these areas, you can help your child start the school year on a high note and set them up for success in their online learning journey.
