Nothing says summer like smooth, cold ice cream! It’s a favorite of young and old alike, and many believe that this beloved treat is sacred and shouldn’t be changed! However, with rising health concerns of sugar, certain dairy, and other ice cream additives, some parents are looking for healthier ice cream options for their families.
To help research some healthier ice cream alternatives for families, we gathered kids and adults to taste test different flavors. Below are two recipes for homemade choices, and watch our taste-testing video to see what our volunteers thought about options such as low-calorie, dairy-alternative, and unique healthier ice cream flavors!
Chocolate Cherry Cordial
- Frozen Dark Cherries (about 2 cups)
- Chocolate Chips (only as much as you want them to have)
- Dark Chocolate Almond Milk (filled to just below cherries in blender)
Place chocolate chips in first to ensure they get properly shredded. Blend all three ingredients in high-powered blender. As a note on the almond milk, you may want to find a brand that does not include carrageenan. Many sources believe this ingredient is a possible carcinogen and should be avoided. This ice cream is a decadent and healthier ice cream alternative for those chocolate-lovers in your family.
Strawberries and Cream with a Twist
- Frozen Strawberries (about 1.5 cups)
- Frozen Avocados (1/2 cup)
- 2 tbsps Honey (locally-sourced)
- Coconut Milk (to just below top of fruit)
Blend all ingredients as in above recipe. This recipe can easily be swapped in and out with your favorite frozen fruit combinations. The avocados help add creaminess to the texture of the ice cream. For the coconut milk, try finding an option low in sugar but that will still add a little bit of sweetness itself. Since you’re relying on just the honey as the sweetener, you’ll want a little extra boost to help accentuate the coconut.
