Are You Ready to Tackle This Pro Football Quiz?

The National Football League kicks off its regular season this week, and it’s a reminder that football offers a lot more to ponder than punts, passes, and kicks. There are educational opportunities to be found in all sports.

Learning Liftoff challenges you to take this 20-question, multiple-choice pro football quiz, which will test your knowledge of not only football, but math, science, history, English, and geography.

The answers (complete with explanations) are provided below the test. But no fair peeking! Let’s see how many you can get right.

1.  It is impossible for a team to finish with one point as its final score. A single extra point may be added, but only after a team scores a touchdown.

2.  The Cardinals’ two touchdowns are worth 12 points, the extra point is 1 point, the safety is 2 points,, and the three field goals produce 9 points for a total of 24.

3.  42 or 43 yards. The ball will be snapped from the 25-yard line. Add 17 or 18 yards for the 10 yards of end zone and 7 to 8 more  yards for the distance between snapper and holder.

4.  Only the rushing (35) and receiving (65) yards are offensive yards.

5.  In the example, Drew Brees completes three of every four of his passes or 75 percent. None of the other quarterbacks complete even 70 percent of their attempts.

6.  The Bears must advance the ball six yards or the equivalent of 18 feet (three feet to a yard).

7.  The Ravens’ name is a reference to Poe’s poem The Raven. The Edgar Allen Poe house and museum is located in Baltimore, Maryland, where Poe spent the final years of his life.

8.  Buccaneers is spelled with two Cs.

9.   Colts should be listed before Cowboys.

10. PSI stands for pounds per square inch.

11. The ACL is a knee ligament.

12.  Jacksonville is in the Eastern time zone; Seattle in the Pacific time zone, which is three hours behind. So if it’s 1 PM in Jacksonville, it’s 10 AM in Seattle.

13. The Pro Football Hall of Fame is located in Canton, Ohio. (Cooperstown is home to the Baseball Hall of Fame; basketball’s Hall of Fame is in Springfield, Massachusetts.)

14. Pennsylvania is not one of the six New England states (Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut).

15. Florida has hosted the most Super Bowls (15), followed by California (11) and Louisiana (10). Hawaii, longtime home to the Pro Bowl, has never hosted a Super Bowl.

16. The Miami Dolphins are based in Florida.

17. Wembley Stadium, which often hosts soccer and rugby, is located in London, England.

18. The Green Bay Packers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs, 35-1o, in the first Super Bowl, which was played in January 1967.

19. The Vince Lombardi Trophy, named after the legendary Green Bay coach, goes to the Super Bowl champion.

20. Robert E. Lee was a Confederate general in the Civil War.  Hancock and Adams, both from Massachusetts, signed the Declaration of Independence. Brady is a four-time Super Bowl winner as quarterback of the New England Patriots.
