Insight School of Colorado student Arielle Gold will miss out on competing in the snowboarding halfpipe at this year’s winter Olympics in Sochi. After a practice run right before her first heat, Arielle took a fall and suffered an injury.
This must come as quite a disappointment as Arielle was one of the favorites to medal. At the age of 17, Arielle is already a decorated snowboarder. Hitting the competition scene in 2011, Arielle has since won many silver and gold medals at events including the Youth Olympic Games, X Games, FIS World Cup, and Grand Prix.
Arielle is part of a small but mighty group of Olympians who were homeschooled or attended an online school. Arielle is a senior at K12 partner school Insight School of Colorado, which she says helps her balance school and snowboarding:
“Doing online school allows me to spend more time on the mountain in the early morning, when the conditions are better, and do school at night time or on weather days. It also helps a lot for traveling because I can easily take my school with me, and all I need to bring is my computer.”
She may not be competing in the Olympics this year, but check out her moves at the 2013 X Games in Aspen to get a preview of what we’ll surely see from her in the years to come.
We are very proud to have such a motivated and talented student as Arielle. Use the comments below to join K12 in sending your best wishes to Arielle and rooting her on for the 2018 games!
