2015 Oscars: 7 Family Friendly Academy Award Nominees

The full list of nominees for the 2015 Academy Awards have been announced, and the winners will be awarded their Oscar statuettes on February 22, 2015. Big Hero 6

Oscars Nomination: Animated Feature Film

 Big Hero 6 (PG) is an action-packed comedy-adventure about a gifted robotics prodigy, Hiro Hamada, and his inflatable robot, Baymax. After a terrible turn of events, Hiro is forced out of his room and into the streets of San Fransokyo. Interstellar (PG-13) features stunning visuals and a story that’s both original and reminiscent of classic space epics, particularly 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Into the Woods

 Oscars Nominations: Actress (in a Supporting Role) – Meryl Streep, Costume Design, Production Design

The screenplay, Into the Woods (PG), beautifully intertwines classic stories of Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel, Cinderella, and others. The major motion picture has become a record-breaking, box-office hit musical with three Golden Globe nominations, a hot-selling soundtrack and kudos from audiences, critics and even fans of the original Broadway show. But what makes the movie wonderful could be lost on or confusing to young children.

Oscars Nominations: Visual Effects, Makeup and Hairstyling

Guardians of the Galaxy (PG-13) is the newest entry to the Marvel adaptations. Your child is most likely begging to see the film. You may have seen the trailers and think this film is just a mindless action movie. It is definitely that, but behind the explosions this film also has good morals, unique characters, and a great story.

The beautifully animated sequel, How to Train Your Dragon 2 (PG), is more action packed than the first, while keeping the same charm and humor as the original. If your child has seen the first, they may be anxious to see the sequel but it may be too much for their younger siblings.

Oscars Nomination: Costume Design

 Maleficent (PG) tells the untold story of the memorable villain from Disney’s 1959 classic Sleeping Beauty. Like Wicked for preteens, the movie is a revisionist take on the popular fairy tale, revealing the events that shaped the villain we thought we knew, and suggesting that maybe she’s not so bad after all.
